| 9th Annual Berkeley Edge Conference
The ninth annual Berkeley Edge Conference will be held October 16-19, 2008 on the University of California, Berkeley campus. We invite you to recommend science, mathematics and engineering students for the conference.
The Berkeley Edge Conference, sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NSF-AGEP), is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students who are competitively eligible for our Ph.D. programs in science, math and engineering to apply to UC Berkeley. (Ph.D. Programs in the STEM fields at UC Berkeley, can be found here: http://ls.berkeley.edu/diversity/bep/conf/phd-programs.html).
If a student you recommend is chosen, UC Berkeley will provide all travel, lodging, and meals for your student.
The conference program includes workshops on preparing competitive applications for graduate admission and fellowships. A highly valued aspect of the conference is the pre-arranged individual and group meetings with UCB faculty for each participating student in their department of interest. Participants also are given tours of the science and engineering departments and research facilities. The National Laboratories in the San Francisco Bay Area-- LBNL, LLNL and Sandia, showcase the research opportunities they offer to Berkeley graduate students. Several formal and informal sessions with current students on graduate studies and graduate student life at Berkeley are lively, informative, and enjoyable. There are opportunities for participants to tour the local area.
June 15, 2008 is the deadline for faculty, research scientists, and other mentors to recommend students for the Berkeley Edge Conference 2008. This is also the deadline for recommended students to complete their applications on-line. Students will be notified of their admission status by August 1, 2008.
To recommend your students on-line and for more information, please visit our web site:

Please let your students know that you have recommended them. Please inform them that their on-line applications and transcripts are due by June 15th.
Thank you for your ongoing support for the Berkeley Edge and our work to increase diversity at the graduate level in science, mathematics and engineering.
Sincerely,
