Nominations Sought for 2009 Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award
for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science, and Diversifying Computing

Portland, OR --The Awards Committee of the 2009 Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference is seeking nominations for the Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science, and Diversifying Computing.
The award will be presented at the 2009 Tapia Conference, to be held April 1-4, 2009 at the Portland, Oregon Marriott Downtown Waterfront. The Tapia award recognizes an individual with outstanding achievements in scientific scholarship, a strong civic presence within the scientific community, and a dedication to the attainment of true ethnic diversity in computing and related disciplines. The ideal recipient will be devoted to the principle of equity in both theory and practice, and will have demonstrated leadership in applying creative solutions to the difficult social, cultural, technical and political problems of diversifying computing.
"The past recipients have made exemplary contributions to their respective disciplines and to our community through their distinguished service," said Roscoe Giles of Boston University, the chair of the Awards Committee. Recipients include Bryant York of Portland State University (2001), Carlos Castillo-Chavez of Arizona State University (2003), Valerie Taylor of Texas A&M University (2005), and Peter Freeman of the Washington Advisory Group and Georgia Tech (2007).
The deadline for submitting nominations is Monday, February 23, 2009. Nominations should be submitted via email to the 2009 Tapia Conference Awards Committee at awards@tapiaconference.org.

About the Tapia Conference
The Tapia Celebration is organized by the Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC), and sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in cooperation with the Computing Research Association (CRA) and the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS). The CDC (http://www.cdc-computing.org/) is a joint organization of the ACM, CRA, and IEEE-CS.
The conference honors the significant contributions of Dr. Richard A. Tapia, University Professor and Maxfield-Oshman Professor in Engineering in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics and Director of the Center for Excellence and Equity in Education at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
