Student Opportunities — Play your Best Card

Sent via email to EL Alliance students

Dear Empowering Leadership (EL) Alliance Students,

I’m writing you today about two important matters: 1) opportunities for you and 2) our interest in your experiences, including a request for your feedback by February 22.

Regarding opportunities—as you consider the many options available to you for your future, you should take advantage of experiences that will add to your understanding of different types of careers. This includes internships, scholarships, and more.

There are many types of research programs, internships, and other opportunities, and you should pursue those in the areas of greatest interest to you, which you can learn about by talking with your advisors, peers, or even searching the Web. You’ll see information on a few opportunities below—some have pressing deadlines. You’ll also find information about opportunities in the monthly EL Alliance Newsletter and on our Website at http://www.empoweringleadership.org/students.html.

When you apply for these opportunities, I urge you to play your best card. By that I mean you should think carefully about your letter of application and how your strengths are a good fit for what is being offered. Get letters of recommendation from well-known leaders, and make sure they understand your interests. Once you’ve established a relationship with leaders in your field, they have a vested interest in your success.

Now, for your feedback: each month in the newsletter, we'll ask a question (or more) about life experiences, professional opportunities, or other areas of interest, and we will report back on your (anonymous) input in the next month's issue. This is a way for us to build community and know what our community believes and values. Please respond by February 22 at https://my.rice.edu/survey/entry.jsp?id=1201197186516 to this month’s questions:

What national computing leader(s) inspires you?
What traits do you most admire in leaders?
What leadership aspirations do you have?
What more would you like to do as a leader in your community or chosen field?

On behalf of the leadership of the EL Alliance, I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Richard A. Tapia
