Letter from Richard Tapia, May 23, 2008
Opportunity for Involvement with the STARS Alliance through Student Teams
Sent via email to the EL Alliance Community
Dear EL Alliance Community,
We have an opportunity we want to share with the EL Alliance community, and in particular our students. The Students and Technology in Academia, Research, and Service (STARS) Alliance has extended an invitation to the EL Alliance to send teams of students to their annual meeting this August 10-13 in Auburn, Alabama, and for those teams to be a part of the STARS Alliance. Student teams work on research or service projects as part of a two-year commitment with input from the STARS Alliance leadership.
We have funding to support a limited number of EL Alliance teams that would like to participate. If you are interested in sending a team, let Cynthia (clanius@bellsouth.net) and Ann (ann@redelfs.us) know asap. Note that we're also interested in a team made up of students from several institutions, so don't hesitate to respond, regardless of whether or not you are part of a group with like interests. The deadline is June 1, and more details are provided below. Please respond asap if you are interested.
Sincerely,
Richard Tapia

Want to reach out to others in computing to promote diversity? EL Alliance students have the opportunity to also become part of the STARS Alliance and attend the August 10-13, 2008 STARS Alliance conference in Auburn, Alabama, where you can meet students from other parts of the United States that are also interested in science, technology, engineering, math, and computing.
What is the STARS Alliance?
The mission of the STARS Alliance is to increase the participation of women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities in computing disciplines through multi-faceted interventions focused on the influx and progression of students from middle school through graduate school in programs that lead to computing careers.
What does it mean to join the STARS Alliance as a student?
You'll become a member of the STARS Leadership Corps (SLC), comprised of students working together on a service project or research program, leveraging the talents within the group. Typically, three to six students from one institution come together to form a team and develop their project, with input from faculty advisors and leaders from the STARS Alliance. The STARS Alliance provides input on the project, including access to resources and leaders interested in the team's project. Each team has a liaison (such as a faculty or staff member) to the STARS Alliance that participates in regular conference calls and helps provide information and feedback for the team. It is expected that you'd spend an average of five hours each week working with your team members on your project. Becoming an SLC student means a student will be eligible to receive SLC support for two years, consisting of $500/semester for undergraduate and graduate students.
Do I have to be on a team or form a team to express my interest in joining?
No. If you already have a team of colleagues you want to work with, that's great. But a team comprised of students from several institutions is also possible. If you're interested in working with a group of students, let us know (see how below), and we'll help match you with students who have similar interests.
What can I expect from the August 10-13 conference?
First, you'll meet students that share your academic, research, and career interests. But there's more! You'll meet national leaders in science, technology, and computing. You'll attend technical sessions at which you can hear about the projects that STARS teams have underway. You'll plan your project with your team, and you'll be able to participate in sessions on leadership, civic engagement and service, and career options.
Is there funding to cover my travel expenses?
Yes, the EL Alliance has funding to support teams attending this conference.
I'm interested! What do I do next?
We need to hear from you as soon as possible-the deadline to register is June 1. Send email to Cynthia Lanius (clanius@bellsouth.net) and Ann Redelfs (ann@redelfs.us), and include the following:
