The EL Alliance is supported through the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Computer and Information Science (CISE) and Engineering's Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program.

Resources: How to Get Involved

The Empowering Leadership (EL): Computing Scholars of Tomorrow Alliance is a national network of dedicated students, faculty, and staff that provides empowering experiences and two-way programs that aim to ensure the success of minority scholars in computing at research institutions.

There are several ways to become involved, at a number of levels. The level of involvement of each person or organization is tailored to match your interests and time available. CISE PIs are invited to contact a member of the EL Alliance Leadership Team (see http://empoweringleadership.org/About_Us/leadership.html), or by writing to info@empoweringleadership.org to discuss opportunities for engagement that match with your interests.

Examples of how you or your organization could become involved are:

  • Helping to identify minority scholars at majority institutions for participation in the EL Alliance.

  • Serving as a mentor (online and/or in person) for EL Alliance students, and/or a speaker at EL Alliance events (videoteleconference and in person at existing conferences).

  • Providing information about opportunities to participate in EL Alliance programs to minority computer science/computer engineering students.

  • Meeting with students at conferences to mentor them during the conference about networking and professional development.

  • Hosting minority speakers at your institution, inviting a range of participants from the EL Alliance and beyond.

  • Organizing a student workshop to highlight minority student coursework and research.

  • Starting a student group at your institution that could host speakers, participate in outreach activities, meet with faculty as a group, and work on projects of value to their careers.

  • Communicating as an ambassador for the about EL Alliance activities and successes, through discussions with your colleagues and in your presentations.

  • Providing information about opportunities of value to students—summer research programs, internships, support for conference participation, scholarships, post doc opportunities, and other resources.

  • Hosting a summer research group consisting of minority students interested in your area of research.

  • Providing resources for students—such as membership in a professional organization, internships, notifications about collaborative work/research opportunities, etc.

  • Providing information on your own achievements that we can share with students via the EL Alliance Website and list serves, to encourage and inspire them.

The EL Alliance welcomes other ideas about how you might participate, and we are prepared and interested in working with you on programs that support minority students in computing. The strength of your expertise, experience, and interest will speak volumes to the students, as well as the greater STEM communities.  Please contact us now at info@empoweringleadership.org.
