NSF STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT

The National Science Foundation (NSF) of the U.S.A, and IEEE PerCom 2008 Steering Committee announce that approximately 10 to 15 student travel grants are anticipated in the amount of $1000-$1500 each, sponsored by the NSF, to attend the Sixth Annual IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom2008) to be held in Hong Kong, March 17-21, 2008. These grants can be applied toward airfare and hotel expenses to attend PerCom 2008. Recipients are expected to make their own travel arrangements.
SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCESS:
* The funding will be used for student travel-related support only.
* The recipients of the travel awards must be US-based students only, that is, Ph.D. students attending universities in the US (not necessarily US citizens or permanent residents).
* Special efforts will be made to recruit student participants who are underrepresented minorities (i.e., African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Native Pacific Islanders) and/or women, coming from diverse institutions.
* Some priority may be given to student authors with accepted papers in PerCom 2008 who may not otherwise be able to attend due to budgetary constraints.
* A committee consisting of Sajal K. Das (Chair), Matt Mutka, and Gergely Zaruba will evaluate the applicants and select the travel grant recipients
* All student travel awardees are required to register for the conference.
TRAVEL GRANT APPLICATION PROCESS:
An application for a travel award will consist of the student's vita, a letter from the student, and a letter from the student's adviser. Applications can be submitted through the EDAS conference management system. The letter from the student should include:
* A brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date;
* A description of areas reflected in the PerCom program that would impact the student's research;
* Why the conference attendance is important to the student.
* In addition, the student's adviser should send a letter of recommendation to the committee that includes: confirmation that the student is a Ph.D. candidate in good standing; the suitability of the PerCom program material to the student's research area; ways this particular student would benefit from attendance at the conference; the strengths and potential contributions of the student; and availability of funds from other sources, particularly the adviser, the student, and/or the student's institute is required to pay for the student's conference registration fee.

* Application Submission: Friday, February 15, 2008
* Decisions/Notification: Tuesday, February 19, 2008
* Acceptance by the Recipient: Friday, February 22, 2008 (conference registration done by then)
* Conference: March 17-21, 2008
